Bitter posts first victory; Burns surpases 1,000 kills

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Bemidji State University volleyball team opened up
it’s 2007 campaign today at the Concordia Invitational in Moorhead, Minn.
The Beavers went 1-1 on the day beating the Valley City State Vikings 3-0
(33-31, 30-25, 30-21) in the first game and falling 3-0 against the Black
Hills State Yellow Jackets (17-30, 28-30, 27-30) in the night cap.

In the first match of the day against Valley City State the Beavers saw a
milestone set as senior Brittney Burns (LeSuer, Minn.) recorded nine kills
in the win, which made her just the seventh Bemidji State volleyball player
to amass 1,000 kills in a career.

The Beaver offensive attack was well paced in the first game as the Beavers
saw three players record nine or more kills. Burns recorded nine kills while
hitting .333 (9k-2e-21at), Burns was joined by newcomers Nicole Olson
(Baudette, Minn.) and Heather Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) on the Beavers
attack. Olson led the team with 12 kills in her first collegiate game
hitting .667 (12k-0e-18at) while Sampson compiled 11 kills hitting at .579

Burns also led the defensive charge as she recorded 13 digs and had one solo
block. Junior Chelsea Geisler (Grand Rapids, Minn.) was close behind as she
recorded 10 digs in her first match wearing the green and white.

Sophomore Allison Kunde (Burnsville, Minn.) recorded a career-high with 36
assist in the match along with eight digs.

The win over the Vikings marks the first collegiate win for head coach
Laurie Bitter and is the first time the Beavers started the season with a
win since 2003 when they beat Concordia-Moorhead in the season opener.

In just their second meeting in school history the Beavers ran into a
swarming Yellow Jacket team from Black Hills State in the night cap. In
Game 1 the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a early lead and never looked back
as the stung the Beavers 30-17. In games two and three the Beavers hung
tough but were unable to escape with a win, and the Yellow Jackets buzzed
away 3-0 win.

Olson once again led the Beaver offensive attack as she set a new
career-high with 14 kills (14K-7e-30at) in the match. Fellow newcomer
Sampson was close behind her with 11 kills (11k-4e-28at).

Defensively sophomore Brie Groskreutz (Reedsburg, Wis.) led the charge as
she posted 13 digs in the match. Kunde had 34 assists in a losing effort.

The Beavers will wrap up action at the Concordia Invitational tomorrow,
Sept. 1, as the Beavers will play the Mayville State Comets at 9:00 a.m.
and then at 12:00 p.m. will play the host team the Concordia College
Cobbers. The match against Mayville State will be played on court 3 and the
match versus the Cobbers will be played on court 1.
