Beavers swept in conference opener, 3-0

Moorhead, Minn. (Alex Nemzek Hall) - The Bemidji State University volleyball team dropped the opener of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to Minnesota State University, Moorhead, 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 14-25), Friday evening from Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.

The combination of hitting below .100 and committing 37 errors played a huge part in the Beavers loss tonight. The Beavers recorded just 30 kills to the Dragons 37 and MSU Moorhead hit .196 points better than BSU on the night. The Beavers hit at a pace of .059 (30k-24e-102at) the fourth time BSU has hit below .100 this season and the second time the Dragons have held BSU to under .100 hitting this season. The Dragons hit .255 (37k-13e-94at) on the evening. MSU Moorhead also controlled play at the net as the Dragons compiled six blocks to just one for Bemidji State.

The tandem of Jennifer Janckila (Sr., MB, Appleton, Wis.) and Nicole Olson (So., MB, Baudette, Minn.) led the offensive charge for the Beavers. Janckila led the Beavers for the second time this season in kills with seven and her counter part, Olson notched six kills respectively. Janckila hit at a rate of .105 (7k-5e-19at) and Olson hit at a sizzling pace of .545 (6k-0e-11at) which is a new season high.

Jessi-Beth McCannell (Fr., LB, Brandon, Manitoba) led the Beavers in digs as she reached double-digit digs for the ninth time this season with 15 digs. Heather Sampson (So., OH, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Lindsey Weyer (So., OH, Loyal, Wis.) each had a block assist on the night.

Courtney Bitter (Fr., S, Bemidji, Minn.) totaled 23 set assists for the Beavers offense while Laura Slinger (Fr., OH, Faribault, Minn.) had three and McCannell added two assists.

With the win the Dragons sweep the season series as MSU Moorhead beat the Beavers in three sets on Sept. 6 at the Golden Eagle Classic in Crookston, Minn.

The win lifts MSU Moorhead in the all-time series over BSU as the Dragons extended their lead to 63-55-1 over the Beavers since the series began in the fall of 1969. BSU is now 7-23 all-time at Alex Nemzek Hall on the campus of Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

The Beavers are currently on a eleven match losing skid versus the Dragons, dating back to October 4, 2003 and the Beavers have not beat the Dragons at Alex Nemzek Hall since October 20, 1999.

With the loss BSU falls to 20-19 all-time in conference openers.

Cathy Turner and Kelci Guenther led the Dragons offense as Turner was the lone player to reach double-digit kills with 11 hitting .529 (11k-2e-17at) and Guenther spiked down nine kills hitting at a high rate of .389 (9k-2e-18at) for the match. Calla Oftedahl posted a match-high of 16 digs defensively while Guenther controlled the net with five block assists. Leigh Splittstoesser paced the Dragons balanced offense with 32 set assists.

Bemidji State (4-9; 0-1 NSIC) will be looking to snap a season long four match losing skid tomorrow afternoon as the Beavers will travel to Crookston, Minn. to take on the Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles from Lysaker Gymnasium. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
