Bemidji State sweeps-up at Best Western/Runza Fall Classic

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Bemidji State University volleyball squad didn’t lose a set in the second and final day of the Best Western/Runza Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The Beavers (3-1, 0-0 NSIC) finished the tournament with a 3-1 record after defeating Rockhurst (Mo.) (25-19, 26-24, 25-19) and Fort Hays State (25-23, 25-17, 25-22). BSU is now on a nine set winning streak and have posted three victories in a row. The three match winning streak is the longest in head coach Laurie Bitter’s career.

The Beavers battled the Hawks in the first match of the day. In the second set, BSU was down by as much as five at 14-9 and never had a lead until 21-20, but found a way to get the last to points and win 26-24. Sophomore Courtney Bitter (S, Bemidji, Minn.) led the Beavers in the win against Rockhurst (Mo.) with 34 assists and 14 digs, her second consecutive double-double. Junior Brie Groskreutz (OH, Reedsburg, Wis.) led the team in kills (11) and digs (20) for her first double-double of the season. Also recording double-digit dig numbers were freshman Bethany Thompson (OH/MB, Owatonna, Minn.) with 11 and junior-transfer Samantha Hertaus (Lbero/DS, Spokane, Wash.) with 10. Junior Nicole Olson (MB, Baudette, Minn.) led the Beavers in blocks with four block assists and one block solo.

BSU completed the tournament with another three-set sweep in a victory against Fort Hays State. The Beavers dug deep in the match, coming back from a 18-13 deficit in the first set to win 25-23 and then rode the momentum wave to victory in the final two sets. Bitter recorded 27 set assists in the match and Groskreutz had 11 digs, to be the only Beavers to record double-digits in any category. FHS only posted a .008 attacking percentage in the match.

The Beavers travel to the Florida Southern Classic, Sept 4-5, hosted by Florida Southern. BSU has four matches scheduled for the two-day event.
