Bemidji State falls twice at Florida Southern Classic

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Bemidji State University volleyball team lost twice in day one of the Florida Southern Classic hosted by No. 14 Florida Southern University. BSU lost to FSU 3-2 (25-11, 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 15-10) to end a three-match winning streak. The Beavers (3-3, 0-0 NSIC) lost in the second match of the day to St. Leo University (Fla.), 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-23).

BSU pushed the Moccasins to five-sets in the first match, but fell just short in the fifth and deciding frame. The Beavers had some jet-lag in the first two sets, but came alive in the third and fourth against the nationally-ranked opponent. In the fifth, BSU couldn’t find a rhythm and FSU grabbed the match. Sophomore Courtney Bitter (S, Bemidji, Minn.) had a season-high 36 set assists. Only one Beaver reached double-digits in kills, as freshman Bethany Thompson (OH/MB, Owatonna, Minn.) had 10. Junior Brie Groskreutz (OH, Reedsburg, Wis.) led the team in digs with 14 and junior Samantha Hertaus (Lbero/DS, Spokane, Wash.) had 10. BSU out-blocked FSU 11-8. Sophomore Kimberly Hacker (MB/RS, Hutchinson, Minn.) had seven blocks (4 ba, 3 bs).

The Beavers couldn’t find a way past St. Leo in the second match of the day. Bitter posted her third double-double of the season with 21 assists and 11 digs. to lead the team in both categories. Junior Nicole Olson (MB, Baudette, Minn.) led the squad in kills with 10. BSU again out-blocked its opponent, this time by a 5-4 margin. Thompson had two block assists.

The Beavers complete the classic tomorrow with matches against Nebraska-Omaha, 11 a.m., and Eckerd (Fla.) at 2 p.m. All times eastern standard time.
