Beavers struggle on final day of Florida Southern Classic

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Bemidji State University volleyball team lost 1-3 twice on the final day of the Florida Southern Classic hosted by No. 14 Florida Southern University. The Beavers (3-5, 0-0 NSIC) lost to Nebraska-Omaha 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23) and Eckerd (Fla.), 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21). With the loses BSU finishes the tournament 0-4.

BSU couldn’t find a way to rebound from Friday, despite scoring 19 or more points in each set against UNO. Sophomore Courtney Bitter (S, Bemidji, Minn.) posted 34 assists and 11 digs in the match. Only one Beaver reached double-digits in kills, as junior Nicole Olson (MB, Baudette, Minn.) had 11. BSU had more digs than UNO, with freshman Laura Carlson (OH, Hutchinson, MInn) leading the way with a career-high 17.

The Beavers fell to Eckerd in the second match of the day. Bitter posted her fifth double-double of the season and the third of the tournament, with a season-high 45 assists and 14 digs, leading the team in both categories. Four Beavers reached double digits in kills and freshman Bethany Thompson (OH/MB, Owatonna, Minn.) led the team with 12.

BSU will look to snap its four-match losing streak as they travel to the Concordia University Tournament, Sept. 11, for four matches against No. 1 Concordia University and No. 8 Southwest Minnesota State.
