BSU Volleyball opens home slate with sweep of U-Mary

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University Volleyball squad opened up their conference slate with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) victory over the University of Mary in their home opener on Tues., Sept. 14 at BSU Gymnasium. With the victory the Beavers improve to 7-2 (1-0 NSIC) on the season. The Marauders fall to 3-6 (0-1 NSIC) on the year.

Bemidji State had a stellar home opener from their hitters as the Beavers finished with 42 kills and a .371 hitting percentage. Nicole Solum (Sr., RS, Spokane, Wash.) led BSU with 11 kills and a .385 attack percentage. Fellow seniors Lindsey Weyer (OH/DS, Loyal, Wis.) and Nicole Olson (MB, Baudette, Minn.) each chipped in 10 blocks while Bethany Thompson (So., OH/MB, Owatonna, Minn.) had nine. All four of those players hit above .350 for the match. Setter Jessi-Beth McCannell (Jr., Brandon, Manitoba) had 36 assists.

Defensively, Brie Groskreutz (Lib., Reedsburg, Wis.) led the Beavers with 14 digs. Olson had five block assists on the night. The Beavers had seven team blocks on the night and held Mary to a .129 hitting percentage.

The University of Mary was led by Julie Paradine with 12 kills and a .348 attack percentage. Setter Emily Turkowski had 27 assists on the game. Defensively, Amanda Hennessy had 12 digs.

With the victory, Bemidji State improves to 8-5 all-time against the Marauders. Tuesday’s 3-0 sweep marks the fourth straight sweep for the Beavers and the sixth sweep of the season. BSU’s 12 game win streak marks the longest they have gone without a loss in a game since 1989.

The win was also the first home victory for Wayne Chadwick as the Beaver head coach. Chadwick’s 7-2 record is the best mark for a BSU head coach through nine games since Donna Palivec led the Beavers to an 8-1 record to begin the 1999 season. BSU finished the year with a 25-7 mark.

Bemidji State will continue play in conference on Fri., Sept. 17 at MSU Moorhead at 7 p.m., and Sat., Sept. 18 at Minnesota, Crookston at 4 p.m.
