BSU Volleyball falls at hands of No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State, 3-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University Volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday evening at BSU Gymnasium. With the loss, the Beavers fall to 8-6 (2-4 NSIC). The Mustangs improve to 11-2 (4-1 NSIC). The loss marks the third-consecutive loss to a ranked opponent for BSU this week after losing to No. 2 University of Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday and No. 12 Minnesota State University, Mankato on Friday.

Bemidji State was held to a .074 hitting percentage by the Mustangs. Nicole Olson (Sr., MB, Baudette, Minn.) led the Beavers with nine kills and a .292 attack percentage. Bethany Thompson (So., OH/MB, Owatonna, Minn.) and Hannah Eilers (Jr., OH, Little Fork, Minn.) each chipped in six kills. Setter Jessi-Beth McCannell (Jr., S, Brandon, Manitoba) was held to 17 assists on the night.

Defensively Brie Groskreutz (Sr., Lib., Reedsburg, Wis.) led the Beavers with 14 digs. McCannell added 13 digs.

The Mustangs were led by Devin Diedrich’s 17 kills and .350 hitting percentage. SMSU hit .261 as a team in Saturday’s match. Brooke Burmeister added nine kills for the Mustangs. Setter Cara Carson finished the night with 37 assists.

Defensively, Kenzie Niesche led SMSU with 23 digs. Rachel Westby and Brittany Wenzel each had 14 digs for the Mustangs. Diedrich added one solo block and four block assists.

BSU lost the first set, 25-12, but made things interesting with a strong second and third set against their ranked foes from Marshall, Minn. Despite the effort, the Beavers were unable the come away with victories in either set and thus lost the match.


Bemidji State will return to action on Fri., Oct. 1, when they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on Augustana. Also next weekends the Beavers will face No. 3 Wayne State (Neb.) on the road.
