Beavers fall to Upper Iowa 3-0
FAYETTE, Iowa-- The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-18) to Upper Iowa University Saturday at Dorman Gymnasium in Fayette, Iowa. The loss marks the ninth straight for a young BSU team. Six of those nine losses came to opponents ranked in the top 15 nationally. The Beavers now stand at 4-16 (1-11 NSIC). The Peacocks improve to 12-9 (6-6 NSIC under first-year head coach Aaron Nelson.

“Upper Iowa has made a lot of improvement since last year with new head coach Aaron Nelson,” said head coach Wayne Chadwick. “They are a very solid group of players and we weren’t able to match their intensity tonight.”

(Jr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) led BSU with seven kills. The Beavers struggled offensively hitting .000 for the match. Kimberly Hacker (Sr., MB/RS, Hutchinson, Minn.) added five kills and hit .286 for the match. Setter Jessi-Beth McCannell (Sr., Brandon, Manitoba) finished with only 11 assists while Courtney Volkmann (Fr., S, Wadena, Minn.) had four assists on the match.

Defensively, Elissa Christensen (Fr., Lib./DS, Montevideo, Minn.) embraced a role she inherited for the weekend as BSU’s libero. Christensen tallied 11 digs to lead all Bemidji State players. Christensen also played libero last night versus Winona State University.

“Elissa Christensen has done a tremendous job of embracing her new role with this team,” Chadwick said. “She has kept a level head through this entire week during a difficult situation.”

Christensen and junior Leigh Peterson (DS, Deer River, Minn.) each played bigger roles this weekend. Peterson finished Saturday’s match with five digs.

The Peacocks were paced offensively by Kristy Hinrichs’ double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs and .478 hitting percentage. Upper Iowa had a tremendous match offensively hitting .389 with 44 kills and nine errors on 90 attempts. Setter Skylan Lesan aided the Peacock attackers with 28 assists.

Defensively, Upper Iowa was led by Hinrichs and Danielle Gernes with 10 digs. Sara Vance, Maryn Fulton and Kayla Wagner each had four block assists as the Peacocks finished with 10 blocks on the night.

The loss is the second of the season for Bemidji State to Upper Iowa. The Peacocks upended BSU 3-0 at the University of Minnesota Duluth in a nonconference match. BSU still leads the all-time series 11-4 over Upper Iowa.

Bemidji State remains on the road next weekend as they face No. 1 Concordia University, St. Paul Oct. 21 and St. Cloud State University Oct. 22.
