ABERDEEN, S.D. (Wachs Arena) -- The Northern State University volleyball team hit .340 and piled up 41 kills in a three-set victory (25-9, 25-13, 25-9) over Bemidji State University Friday night at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The loss was the fifth in a row for the Beavers, who last won against the University of Mary at home on Oct. 26 by a 3-0 score. The Wolves also completed a season sweep of BSU with the win and are now 30-33 against the Beavers all-time. NSU pulled out a four-set win in Bemidji on Oct. 6.
After allowing a 1-0 lead to turn into a 4-1 deficit in the first set, Bemidji was unable to recover as Northern State cruised to a 25-9 win. The Beavers did draw within a 9-7 score, but the Wolves rallied for a 16-2 run to close out game and take a 1-0 lead.
Northern State carried the momentum from its first set win into the second set by opening with an 8-0 lead. BSU could only rally to within seven points at 15-8 and the Wolves thwarted any possible comeback from there with a 10-5 run to finish with a 25-13 win.
Following the intermission, red-hot NSU finished off its 11th win in 13 matches with another 25-9 win in the third set. The Wolves went on another big run to complete the triumph, taking 16 of the final 20 points.
The 31 total points in the match tie the second-lowest total in program history since matches changed to best-of-five sets in 2008. In addition to winning the hitting battle, Northern State out-dug BSU 59-38.
Bethany Thompson (Sr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) and Rachel Craig (So., MH, Wadena, Minn.) led the Beavers with five kills apiece while Courtney Volkmann (So., S, Wadena, Minn.) added 14 assists, seven digs and a team-best two services aces in the loss. Craig also tied a team high with two blocks. Kayla DeJong (Fr., DS, Jefferson, Wis.) tied a career-best with a team-high eight digs. She is up to 98 on the season.
With one match to play, Thompson is 17 kills shy of becoming the ninth Beaver to reach 1,000 for her career. The All-NSIC Second Team selection has a career-best 337 kills this season. With three more kills, Thompson will move into ninth on BSU’s career kills list, surpassing Kris Kuehlwein’s 985 from 1993-96.
The Beavers will conclude their season with road match on Saturday against the Minnesota State University, Moorhead on the road. The Dragons swept BSU on Oct. 5.
