Bemidji State drops a match at Sioux Falls, 3-0

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Bemidji State University volleyball team lost to University of Sioux Falls Friday evening in three sets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-19. The Beavers fall to 3-10 on the season and 1-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate play.

Bemidji State was led by Jessica Yost (OH, So., Bemidji, Minn.), who had eight kills, nine digs, three service aces and three blocks. Defensively, Kayla DeJong (DS, Jr., Jefferson, Wis.) led the way with 14 digs (4.67 digs per set).

Set 1: Sioux Falls took the first set, 25-20, when it hit .367 compared to BSU’s -.033. Despite the Beavers’ offensive struggles, they were within one point of the Cougars at 21-20 but USF rattled off four consecutive points to close out the first stanza.

Set 2: The Cougars took a 2-0 lead on a 25-17 win. The difference in the set was the ability of USF to put together scoring runs. Sioux Falls had a pair of 4-0 runs in the stanza and one 5-0 run.. The 5-0 run dashed BSU’s chances as it was behind by just two points, 15-13 before the Cougars extended their lead to 20-13 and eventually 25-17.

Set 3: USF closed out the match with a combination of efficient hitting and good defense. The Cougars hit .281 on 32 swings, while holding the Beavers to .061 on 33 swings. USF’s presence on the block was the difference in the frame as it had five blocks in the third alone, which was almost the margin of victory, 25-19.

Up Next: Bemidji State will travel to Marshall, Minn. Saturday to face No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University in another NSIC clash. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
