Beavers fall in three to No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University, this afternoon in Marshall, Minn. With the loss, the Beavers fall to 3-11 this season and 1-5 in conference play. SMSU improves to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.

Jessica Yost (OH, So., Bemidji, Minn.) and Chelsea Frison (MB, Jr., Whitewater, Wis.) led the Beavers with six kills, followed by Kelsi Crawford (OH, Sr., Wadena, Minn.) with five kills off the bench.

Set 1: The Mustangs’ defense was the key in their first set win over the Beavers. BSU committed just four errors in the stanza, but SMSU dug up 20 attacks to keep the play going. SMSU hit efficiently enough to gradually extend its lead to 11 points, which was the final margin of victory, 25-14.

Set 2: Bemidji State had an early 4-2 lead in the second, but SMSU answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead 10-4. BSU cut the deficit to four twice, 11-7 and 12-8, but that was as close as the Beavers got as SMSU took the frame, 25-16.

Set 3: The Beavers and the Mustangs exchanged the first handful of points in the stanza and were tied 7-7, but SMSU went on 10-1 run to separate itself from Bemidji State making the score 17-8. BSU made a comeback attempt as it outscored SMSU 9-8 in the latter stages of the frame, but the nine-point hole was too much as the Beavers fell, 25-17.

Bemidji State will return to action next weekend as it travels to face a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, No. 3 Concordia University, St. Paul (Oct. 3) and (RV) Minnesota State University, Mankato (Oct. 4). First serve is scheduled for 7 and 5 p.m., respectively.
