Bemidji State heads south for a pair of NSIC tilts

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University volleyball team travels south this weekend to play a pair of ranked opponents. On Friday BSU will face reigning national champions, Concordia-St. Paul and Saturday it will face Minnnesota State University, Mankato. First serve for the two matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 5 p.m, respectively.

Scouting the Beavers
Bemidji State’s offense this season has gone through a pair of sophomore outside hitters, Jessica Yost (OH, So., Bemidji, Minn.) and Amanda Tronick (OH, So., Hutchinson, Minn.). Yost leads the way with 173 kills and Tronick isn’t far behind with 133 kills.

Setting up Yost and Tronick has been Courtney Volkmann (S, Sr., Wadena, Minn.). Volkmann has dished out 340 assists this season and currently ranks seventh on BSU’s all-time assist list with 2,132 assists.

Defensively, BSU has been led by junior Kayla DeJong (DS, Jr., Jefferson, Wis.) and senior Rachel Craig (MB, Sr., Wadena, Minn.). DeJong paces the team with 226 digs (4.43 digs/set), while Craig is leading on the block with 48 total blocks (0.94 blocks/set).

Scouting Concordia-St. Paul
Concordia-St Paul is looking for its unprcedented eighth straight national championship this season. Golden Bears’ head coach Brady Starkey has a winning percentage of .919 in his 12 seasons at the school with seven national championships and 11 NSIC Championships.

The Golden Bears are the most efficient hitting team in the NSIC this season (.297). Leading CU’s attack has been Riley Hanson who leads the team with 157 kills in 305 attempts with a hitting percentage .400.

Scouting Minnesota State
The Mavericks are back in the top half of the NSIC this season after having a disappointing 2013 campaign. MSU is currently receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll after a 9-4 start.

Sophomore middle blocker Krista Hassing and senior outside hitter Chandra Honebrink come into the week sitting in the top ten of the conference in kills per set. Hassing is seventh avergaing 3.72 per set with a total of 186 kills while Honebrink ranks ninth in the conference with 3.62 per set and 181 total kills, while Ellie Van De Steeg comes into the week ranked third in the NSIC with an average of 12.06 assists per set, giving her a total 603 assists on the year.

Quick Hits
First NSIC Win
Last Tuesday the Beavers got their first conference victory of the season against St. Cloud State. The sweep was the first for the Beavers versus a NSIC opponent since Oct. 26, 2012 against University of Mary.

Volkmann Watch
Courtney Volkmann continues to rack up assists for the Beavers and now has 2,132 assists in her career. Volkmann needs 209 helpers to move into a tie for sixth place with former Beaver Amy Soehnen.

You Got Yosted
BSU sophomore Jessica Yost currently ranks ninth in the conference with 173 kills this season (3.39 kill/set).

DeJong Digging
DeJong currently ranks sixth in the NSIC with 226 digs and ranks eighth in the conference with 4.43 digs per set.

On the Block
Senior Rachel Craig is tied for sixth in the NSIC in blocks with 48. Craig has led the Beavers in blocks in each of her four seasons.  

Chadwick Climbing
Head Coach Wayne Chadwick currently has 31 career wins as BSU’s head coach which is the fifth most in program history. Chadwick needs just one win to tie former Beaver head coach Jan Gudknecht for fourth on the all-time wins list.  

Series history vs. Concordia St. Paul
The Beavers are 9-27-1 all-time against the Golden Bears, but CU has won the last 25 matches against Bemidji State, including both matches last season. Bemidji State last defeated CU Nov. 2, 2001 in Bemidji, Minn., 3-2.  

Series history vs. Minnesota State
Bemidji State and Minnesota State have met a total of 52 times with Minnesota State having the 34-18 advantage over Bemidji State. BSU last defeated the Mavericks September 13, 1997, 3-1.
