Bemidji State drops a match to Minnesota State, 3-0

MANKATO, Minn. (Taylor Center) — Krista Hassing posted 16 kills in 22 attack attempts for an attacking percentage of .682 to lead the Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks to a three-set victory over the Bemidji State University volleyball team Saturday evening in Mankato, Minn. With the loss, Bemidji State moves to 3-13 overall and 1-7 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.

Courtney Volkmann (S, Sr., Wadena, Minn.) led BSU with 19 assists and eight digs against the Mavericks, while sophomore Jessica Yost (OH, So., Bemidji, Minn.) paced the squad with eight kills in 24 attack attempts.

Set 1: Minnesota State used a late 9-4 run to extend a 16-10 lead to the eventual 25-14 final tally. Minnesota State’s offense was firing on all cylinders as hit a match-best .571 in the first compared to .083 mark by BSU. Senior Rachel Craig (MB, Sr., Wadena, Minn.) led the Beavers in the first frame with three kills.

Set 2: The two teams traded the first 18 points in the second set. With the score 9-9, MSU’s offense got its things rolling with 13 of its final 16 points coming off kills en route to a 25-15 set victory. Senior Kelsi Crawford (OH, Wadena, Minn.) sparked the Beavers’ offense early with a pair of kills to tie the score at 9-9, but the Beaver defense could not stop MSU’s attacks.

Set 3: Bemidji State played its most complete stanza in the third. Volkmann notched one of her four kills in the match to give the Beavers a 14-13 lead, Hassing provided MSU a boost, however, with three kills and a block to push ahead of BSU and take the third frame, 25-22.

Bemidji State returns to BSU Gymnasium next weekend for a pair of NSIC matches against Upper Iowa University (Oct. 10) at 7 p.m. and Winona State University (Oct. 11) at 4 p.m.
