DULUTH, Minn. (Romano Gymnasium) — No. 2 University of Minnesota Duluth swept the Bemidji State University volleyball team Tuesday evening in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match by the scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-20. UMD improves to 18-1 and 11-0 in league play, while Bemidji State drops to 3-16 overall and 1-10 in the NSIC.

Senior Rachel Craig (MB, Wadena, Minn.) paced BSU in the match with nine kills in 14 attack attempts (.571). Craig also registered a pair of blocks defensively to help the Beavers out block the Bulldogs for the match five to one.

Set 1: Bemidji State outhit the Bulldogs in the first frame .483 to .455 but an early 6-0 run by UMD was too much for BSU to overcome as it fell, 25-20. UMD’s Sydnie Mauch led the way for the Bulldogs in the first with six kills, while Craig notched four kills for the Beavers.

Set 2: After hitting over .400 in the first, Bemidji State fell all the way down to .200 in the second but the Bulldogs continued their potency offensively hitting .424 in a 25-13 set victory. Amanda Tronick (OH, So., Hutchinson, Minn.) posted her best set in the match with three of her six kills coming in the second, but UMD’s defense dug in its heels and allowed just nine kills by BSU in 33 attempts to take a 2-0 lead.

Set 3: Like in the first set, Minnesota Duluth used an early 6-0 run to separate itself from Bemidji State and take the set, 25-20. The Beavers closed the gap to just two points (22-20) late in the set because of 12 errors committed by UMD, forcing the Bulldogs to take a timeout. Following the timeout, the Bulldogs notched three kills to take the set and match.

The Beavers return home to BSU Gymnasium for a two-match home stand beginning Friday at 7 p.m. versus Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University Saturday at 5 p.m.
