BSU opens NSIC play against St. Cloud State and (1) Minnesota Duluth

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team will begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Thursday at 7 p.m. versus St. Cloud State University and then host the No. 1 team in the nation in the University of Minnesota Duluth, Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Beavers are paced on defense by libero Kayla DeJong (Sr., Jefferson, Wis.). She leads the team with 148 digs (4.48 d/s), followed by outside hitter Jessica Yost (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) with 95 (2.28 d/s). Hailey Kauling (Fr., Naperville, Ill.) leads the Beavers with 23 blocks (1bs-22ba), while Kori Leist (Fr., Hortonville, Wis.) follows with 16 (6bs-10ba).

Bemidji State runs its offense through two setters in Ashley Kiecker (Sr., Hector, Minn.) and Jordyn Koehn (So., Mukwonago, Wis.). Koehn paces the Beavers with 133 assists (4.43 a/s) followed closely by Kiecker with 132 (4.00 a/s). Leading the attack is Amanda Tronick (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) with 96 kills (2.91 k/s) and a .177 hitting percentage. She is followed by Jessica Yost (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) with 88 kills (2.67 k/s) and a .167 hitting percentage.

The Huskies have compiled a 4-4 record in non-conference play before they host the Beavers on Thursday and will travel to the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.

St. Cloud State uses a balanced attack with hitters Sophie Jakulske, Macy Weller and Rachel Burke. Jakulske paces the Huskies’ attack with 75 kills (2.42 k/s) followed by Weller and Burke who each have 74 kills at 2.39 k/s and 2.47 k/s, respectively.

Brianne Stamer leads the Huskies’ defense with 183 digs (5.90 d/s) and ranks ninth in the nation in total digs. She is followed by Shannon Klink with 93 digs (3.00 d/s). As a team, the Huskies have 56 blocks (1.81 b/s) and are led by Kellan Flynn who has 30 blocks (2bs-28ba).

The Bulldogs enter this week’s play with a 7-1 record and earned 25 first-place votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll to reach the top-ranking for the first time this season. UMD is coached by Jim Boos and enters his 14th season in 2015.

Outside hitter Mariah Scharf leads the Bulldog attack with 124 kills (3.80 k/s) and sports a .224 hitting percentage. She is followed by Sydnie Mauch with 95 kills (3.65 k/s) and ranks second in the nation with a .503 hitting percentage. Setting the ball for Minnesota Duluth is Ashley Hinsch who has totaled 386 assists (12.06 a/s) so far this season ranking her third in the nation.

Defensively, the Bulldogs are paced by Madison Kelly and Erin Schindler who have 87 (3.00 d/s) and 81 digs (4.76 d/s), respectively. With 77 total team blocks, Minnesota Duluth ranks 11th in the nation and are led by Monica Turner with 35 total blocks (5bs-30ba).
