Bemidji State Falls to No. 1 Minnesota Duluth

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell to No. 1 University of Minnesota Duluth 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-11) Sunday afternoon at the BSU Gymnasium. With the loss, the Beavers drop to 2-9 (0-2 NSIC) on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 9-1 (2-0 NSIC).

Bemidji State started strong in the first set kept pace with the No. 1 ranked Bulldogs and were tied 6-6 early. However, UMD went on to score the next seven points and distanced themselves from the Beavers. The Bulldogs would close out the set by scoring 12 of the next 18 points to win 25-13.

Minnesota Duluth continued where they left off in the previous set and opened the second set by scoring nine out of 10 points for a 9-1 lead over BSU. The Beavers would rally back and pulled within five, but the Bulldogs attack proved too difficult for the Beavers to defend and took the second set 25-11.

The Beavers kept pace with the Bulldogs early in the third set but another rally by UMD gave them an 11-5 lead. Bemidji State would go on to score 11 points in the set after four kills by junior Amanda Tronick, but Minnesota Duluth took the third and final set 25-11 to remain undefeated in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Leading the attack for BSU was Tronick, Kori Leist, and Jessica Yost who each contributed five kills in the match. Ashley Kiecker paced the Beavers with 18 assists, and senior Kayla DeJong led the defense with seven digs.

Bemidji State will be on the road for its next match in Crookston, Minn. to face the University of Minnesota Crookston at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
