MSU Moorhead tops Bemidji State in four

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- The Bemidji State University volleyball team opened its match Friday with a decisive set victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead, but the Dragons bounced back to take the next three and earn a 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 21-25, 21-25) win at the BSU Gymnasium.

Jessica Yost collected 17 kills and 14 digs for a double-double to lead the Beavers, while Amanda Tronick added 17 kills and Kayla DeJong netted a team-high 22 digs in the match.

The Beavers started the match with a lot of energy and had one of their better sets offensively this season. As a team, BSU compiled a .351 hitting percentage with 18 kills. The set started by each team going toe-to-toe with the other and trading points, but BSU broke the tie by going on a seven-point run. The Beavers would close out the set by scoring three out of the remaining six points and took the first set 25-19.

The Dragons came out in the second set with new energy and the Beavers failed to match their opponent. MSU-Moorhead went on multiple scoring rallies and defeated BSU 25-16 to tie the match 1-1.

Late in the third set, the Dragons looked to pull ahead in the match and led BSU 20-16, but Bemidji State rallied back by scoring five out of eight points. However, the Beavers comeback would fall short as BSU fell in the set 25-21.

Down 2-1 in the match, Bemidji State would need another comeback that it has produced in previous matches. MSU-Moorhead took an early lead in the set at 9-4, but three straight kills by Tronick and attacking errors by the Dragons pulled BSU within one at 10-9. However, that would be the closest the Beavers would get to tying the set when the Dragons responded by scoring seven out the next eight points to distance themselves from the Beavers. BSU would eventually fall in the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Bemidji State will cap off homecoming week with a match against No. 9 Northern State University at 5 p.m. Saturday.
