Bemidji State falls to No. 10 Wayne State in three sets

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team dropped its third straight contest against a nationally ranked opponent after falling to No. 10 Wayne State College Friday night. The Beavers (4-13, 3-5 NSIC) fell in three sets (22-25, 11-25, 17-25) to the Wildcats (13-3, 6-2 NSIC).

Junior Jessica Yost led the Beavers with 14 kills while also making eight digs, and Amanda Tronick excelled defensively after she recorded 21 digs.

“We looked really good the first game and got up 18-12 early,” said head coach Wayne Chadwick. “But they came back to win the game 25-22. We struggled in game two and lost 25-11, but I thought we did a lot of good things in game three and I think there are some positives we can take from tonight.”

The Beavers started strong against the No. 10 team in the nation and went up 18-12, but like Chadwick said, WSC rallied back and took the lead over BSU at 19-18, and eventually won set one 25-22.

Bemidji State struggled during the second set and fell 25-11, but responded with a better performance in the third. The Beavers looked to be out of the match after doing down 20-12, but they rallied back and pulled within eight points before falling 25-17.

The Beavers were out hit in the match at .162 to .259, but played well defensively by tallying 63 digs and had 11 blocks to just five for the Wildcats.

Bemidji State will continue its tough conference schedule by traveling to No. 20 Augustana College Saturday for a NSIC match-up beginning at 3 p.m.
