Beavers drop final matches at Minot State Classic

MINOT, N.D. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team dropped two games on the final day of the Minot State Classic Saturday afternoon to close out the first weekend of the season. The Beavers (1-3, 0-0 NSIC) started the day by falling to Montana State University-Billings, 3-0, and then fell to Minot State University, 3-1.

Bemidji State 0, Montana State-Billings 3

The Beavers started day two of the Minot State Classic by falling to Montana State-Billings in the first set. The Beavers and Yellowjackets traded points for most of the set with neither team gaining more than a five-point lead until set-point. BSU pulled within two of MSUB at 20-22 late in the set, but the Yellowjackets fired off three-straight points to win the first set, 25-22.

The second set started off strong for the Beavers with BSU holding a 6-5 lead early, however, the Yellowjackets rolled on with a five-point run to take a 10-6 lead. The Beavers could never recover from the deficit only pulling within five at 19-24 before the Yellowjackets tallied the final point of the set to take the 2-0 lead, 25-19.

The third set would be much of the same from the set before in that Montana State-Billings dominated play throughout the set. The Beavers fell down early 4-10 and could never recover. Despite pulling within one at 19-20, the Beavers were unable to take the lead from the Yellowjackets and fell in the final set, 24-26.

Freshman Becka Cronin led the way for the Beaves by tallying a team-high 10 kills during the match and hitting at a .273 clip. Junior Mikhaila Ness and sophomore Julie Touchett add eight kills each while Touchett led the Beavers by attacking at a .389 percentage.

Bemidji State 1, Minot State 3

The second match started more in favor of Bemidji State with the Beavers opening on a 4-1 run. Minot State didn’t fall behind long however, and came back to tie the game at 9-9. However, that would be the last time MiSU would tie the Beavers as BSU took set one 25-20. Ness continued her attack from match one and led the Beaves with four kills in the first set.

Bemidji State seemed to lose its energy after the first set and fell down early to Minot State 6-12. The Beavers tried to close the distance between their rival but could never pull within six and MiSU evened the score with a 25-18 win in set two.

The Beavers looked to bounce back in the third set and held a 13-9 lead halfway through the set, but a 4-0 run by Minot State shrunk their lead and tied the game. MiSU went on to score five of the next six points to earn a lead and never looked back from then and took set three, 19-25.

The fourth set would fall in favor of the Beavers from Minot State once again after MiSU won the fourth and final set 25-19 to close out the final game of the Minot State Classic.

Sami Leach led the Beavers with 10 kills, hit .471 and tallied 33 assists to lead the Beavers while Mikhaila Ness and Jessica Reega each added eight kills.

The Beavers will be in action next weekend at the Keweenaw Classic on the campus of Michigan Tech University and will face the Huskies, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Lake Superior State University and Northern Michigan University.
