BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell to Upper Iowa University, 3-0 (13-25, 20-25, 16-25), Friday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
Julie Touchett and Sami Leach each led the Beavers with six kills in the match while freshman Anna Averkamp added four.
“I thought defensively we played really well tonight,” said head coach Kevin Ulmer. “I thought our back-court played great but we’re just looking for an outside hitter to step up and be a consistent attack for us right now.”
The Beavers could never recover from a slow start, trailing 13-1 early in set one and eventually falling 25-13. BSU responded however with 20 points in the next set but were unable to close out the game, falling 20-25. The Beavers hung with the Peacocks in set three trailing by just one point at 10-11 halfway through the set but a 14-6 scoring run by UIU finished the set and match, 25-16.
The Beavers were out-hit in the match 48-23 with the Peacocks attacking at a .234 efficiency compared to just .071 for Bemidji State. Sophomore Emma Hallmann led the defense with 12 digs while Shelby Haney, Becka Cronin and Taylor Nier each added nine. Junior Maddie Filipiak led the team with three blocks while Jessica Reega added two.
BSU continues action at home tomorrow by hosting No. 14 Winona State University at the BSU Gymnasium at 3 p.m.
