BEMIDJI, Minn. – Looking to snap its 15-match losing streak, the Bemidji State University volleyball team hits the road to face University of Mary and Minot State University this weekend. The Beavers (3-19, 0-13 NSIC) have favorable match-ups this weekend by facing the Marauders (5-17, 1-12 NSIC), losers of 10 straight, and the Minot State (4-18, 0-13 NSIC), also winless in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Series History
U-Mary: The Beavers and Marauders will meet for just the 25th meeting since the series began in 1987 and the only meeting of 2017. Bemidji State holds a slight advantage in the all-time series record at 13-11, including winning the last meeting in 2016. The Beavers defeated the Marauders, 3-1, at home Oct. 15, 2016.

Minot State: Bemidji State and Minot State clash in the Beaver Battle for just the ninth time in the two school’s history this weekend. BSU holds the all-time series record at 5-3 and have won three consecutive matches against MiSU. Bemidji State defeated MiSU, 3-1, at home Oct. 14, 2016 in their last meeting.

The Teams    
U-Mary: The Marauders return home after a four-match road trip looking to snap a 10-match losing streak that began on Sept. 19. U-Mary owns a 5-17 season record and is 14th in the NSIC standings with a 1-12 conference record. The Marauders fell to St. Cloud State University and University of Minnesota Duluth on the road last weekend.

U-Mary bases its attack around Lauren Randall who ranks second in the league averaging 4.42 kills per set. She has totaled 323 kills this season, also second in the NSIC, and 26th in Division II. She is hitting .200 this season, second on the team. Anna Nietfeld is the only other Marauder to average more than two kills per set at 2.02 totaling 101 kills in 50 sets. Amanda Lopes coordinates the attack, averaging 9.06 assists per set, 10th in the NSIC. Geovana Almeida leads the Marauders’ back-court with 251 digs this season averaging 3.18 per set while Madison Berghold protects the net and has totaled 27 blocks.

Minot State: Minot State is the only other team in the NSIC winless in conference action at 0-13 and have lost four consecutive matches. The Beavers are 4-18 on the season and fell to No. 5 UMD and SCSU on the road in the previous weekend.

Shelby Spuller is the only Minot State attacker to average more than two kills per set, leading the team with a 3.28 mark. However, she is only hitting .132 on the season with Hailey Swain leading the team with a .241 hitting efficiency.  Kelsey Dewulf coordinates the Beavers’ attack, leading the team with 653 assists and averaging 8.82 per set. Karli Koza leads the Beavers’ back-court and has totaled 383 digs on the season averaging 5.11 per set while Hailey Swain protects the net and has totaled 60 blocks ranking 17th in the league.

Bemidji State: The Beavers hit the road for their second to last road trip of the season looking to snap a 15-match losing streak. The Beavers are tied for 15th in the NSIC standings with a 0-13 conference record.

Bemidji State is led on offense by freshman Anna Averkamp who leads the team by averaging 1.80 kills per set. Junior Sami Leach leads the team in total kills with 133 but Averkamp has tallied 115 kills in just 21 matches. Sophomore Julie Touchett leads the team with a .254 hitting percentage and is third on the team with 118 kills. Leach coordinates the Beavers’ attack and has 403 assists on the season for a 5.30 per set mark while sophomore Shelby Haney has also added 205 assists and 3.94 per set. Sophomore Emma Hallmann is one of the best servers in the conference and is ninth in the conference with 28 service aces. She is also the defensive center for the Beavers leading the team with 243 digs and ranks 19th in the NSIC at 3.20 digs per set. Junior Maddie Filipiak protects the net for the Beavers leading the team with 60 blocks, ranking 18th in the league with that total. Touchett has also been a contributing factor in blocks and has totaled 53 this season.
