Bemidji State Volleyball falls in five-set match at MSU-Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell to Minnesota State University, Moorhead in five sets (25-23, 14-25, 26-24, 5-25, 15-17) Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action. The Beavers (4-9, 1-4 NSIC) were led by their middle-blockers in senior Maddie Filipiak and junior Julie Touchett who tallied 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while freshman outside-hitter Greta Paszek added nine.

The Beavers jumped to an early lead over the Dragons by going on a four-point run to take a 13-8 lead in the first half of set one. BSU extended its lead to 19-13 but a four-point run by MSUM pulled the Dragons within two. MSU-Moorhead pulled within one at 24-23 but the Beavers were able to close out the 25-23 victory after an attacking error by the Dragons. The Beavers were led by Filipiak who totaled four kills in the set.

Set two would begin with each team trading points back-and-forth and midway through the set, the score was tied, 11-11. The Dragons would run away with it from then on however and went on a four-point run and six-point run to take a 21-13 lead. The Beavers couldn’t recover from the deficit and eventually fell 25-14 in the set to even the match at 1-1.

Set three remained competitive throughout the entire set with neither team able to go on long runs and each team trading points throughout the set. The Dragons would take a two-point lead over the Beavers late at 24-22 but a four-point rally including kills from sophomore Becka Cronin and Touchett gave BSU the 26-24 victory and 2-1 match lead.

The fourth set would be dominated by MSU-Moorhead as the Beavers could only muster five points in the set. The score was tied at 3-3 but a nine-point run and then an 11-point run gave the Dragons a huge 23-4 lead where they eventually won, 25-5.

MSU-Moorhead took an early lead over the Beavers in the fifth set at 8-4 but BSU responded by scoring seven-out-of-10 points to tie the set at 11-11. Each team traded points until the score was 15-15 but two consecutive points by the Dragons sealed the 17-15 and 3-2 win for MSU-Moorhead.

The Beavers return home to host a four-match homestand beginning with University of Mary and Minot State University, Sept. 21 and 22.
