BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell to No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State University, 3-0 (23-25, 12-25, 19-25), Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Beavers (5-12, 2-7 NSIC) were led by junior Julie Touchett who recorded eight kills in the match while also earning three blocks.
“I thought we executed the gameplay a little bit better today than we did yesterday and started off the match with a more focused attitude,” said head coach Kevin Ulmer. “We did some really good things and showed the offense ability the team has but just need to figure out how to close games at the end.”
The Beavers played their best set of the match in set one despite falling down early in the set, 5-1. BSU responded with a four-point rally to bring the score closer. The Beavers and Mustangs traded points throughout the set and late in the set the Beavers held a 23-22 lead. However, three consecutive kills from the Mustangs including two from All-American Taylor Reiss gave SMSU the 25-23 victory.
The Mustangs dominated set two straight from the beginning and jumped out to a 11-6 lead over the Beavers. Bemidji State could never gain momentum in the set, falling 25-12.
The Beavers battled in set three and held an 8-6 advantage over the Mustangs early on but SMSU rallied back to even the score. BSU and SMSU traded points throughout the rest of the set and with seven points remaining, the score showed 18-18. However, a five-point streak by the Mustangs gave them the lead at 23-18 and they were able to finish the set, 25-19.
Bemidji State attacked well as a team, firing for a .202 hitting efficiency with just five errors in the match but couldn’t match the strong attack of SMSU who hit .333 as a team and were led by Reiss and Sarina Smith whoe each totaled 14 kills.
Behind Touchett’s effort, freshman Greta Paszek earned seven kills in the match and hit at a .214 clip. The Beavers earned eight team blocks in the match including a match-high from senior Maddie Filipiak (0s-5a) and three from Touchett (1s-2a) and Mary Campbell (0s-3a). Junior Emma Hallmann led the Beavers’ backcourt with 14 digs while Kelli Auer added 12.
Bemidji State returns to action on the road when they travel to face Wayne State College and Augustana University, Oct. 5-6.
