BSU Volleyball falls twice on second day of Huskies Classic

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team fell in both matches on the second day of the Huskies Classic Friday afternoon. The Beavers (3-4, 0-0 NSIC) fell to No. 21 Michigan Technological University 3-1 (31-29, 17-25, 12-25, 13-25) in the first match of the day and fell to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 23-25) to conclude the day.

Senior Julie Touchett led the team with 21 kills on the day while sophomore Haley Stolt added 19 and junior Becky Schroeder added 17.

In the first game of the day, the Beavers were able to take set one against the No. 21 Huskies of Michigan Tech by a score of 31-29 but the Huskies rolled to win three consecutive sets and the match, 3-1. Bemidji State totaled 40 kills in the match including 11 from Touchett and Stolt but had no answer for Huskies outside hitter Olivia Ghormley who totaled 25 of the team’s 69 kills.

The Beavers hit .123 in the match as a team, led by junior Randi Johnson who hit .286 with three kills while setter Maddie Mackinac earned 35 assists. On defense, senior Emma Hallmann led the team with 19 digs while Mackinac followed with 10 digs to earn the double-double.

In match two, the Beavers totaled 36 kills just four behind the Miners but committed 22 attacking errors compared to just 11 for the Miners to lead to the 3-0 sweep. Touchett and Schroeder led the team with 10 kills a-piece while Stolt added eight.

The Beavers hit just .117 as a team compared to .244 by the Miners while Mackinac earned 32 assists coordinating the attack. Hallmann once again led the BSU defense with 15 digs while Schroeder followed with 11 to record the double-double.

Bemidji State will try to bounce back from the losses tomorrow afternoon when they face No. 14 Wheeling University at 3 p.m., for the final match of the Huskies Classic.
