Volleyball earns second consecutive win with 3-1 victory over U-Mary

BEMIDJI, Minn. – A day removed from its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory, the Bemidji State University volleyball team earned conference win number two with a 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 30-28) victory over University of Mary, Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers improve their season record to 5-11 overall and are 2-6 in conference play. Senior Julie Touchett led the team with 15 kills and hit .367 (15-4-30), both match highs.

Bemidji State started the match with a 25-17 win over the Marauders (1-16, 0-8 NSIC) in set one but U-Mary responded with a 25-21 win in set two. Set three would be a back-and-forth affair with BSU holding a 22-14 lead late. However, the Marauders rallied for seven of the next eight points to bring the score 23-21 but a kill by junior Anna Averkamp and Marauder attack error gave the Beavers the 25-21 win and 2-1 match lead.

The fourth set was a tightly contested one that included 11 ties and four lead changes. Each team traded points throughout the set and found themselves locked 25-25. U-Mary took a 28-27 lead over the Beavers but BSU forced three consecutive attack errors to win the fourth and final set, 30-28.

Sophomore Haley Stolt followed Touchett with 12 kills and hit .102 (12-7-49) while Averkamp added 11 kills and hit .143 (11-6-35). Redshirt freshman Maddie Mackinac totaled 44 assists for the Beavers’ attack that hit .192 as a team. Mackinac also contributed 15 digs defensively for the double-double.

Senior Emma Hallmann led the Beavers with 21 digs while sophomore Taylor Kot added 12. At the net, junior Randi Johnson led BSU with four blocks (2s-2a) with Stolt following with three (1s-2a).

The Beavers will have a short turnaround before their next action and remain home to host No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth Tuesday at 6 p.m.
