MSU Moorhead uses hot shooting to upend BSU, 74-46

BEMIDJI, MINN. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons used basketball’s equivalent of a perfect half from Angie Jetvig (seven-of-seven from the floor) to catapult out to a 22 point led at half over Bemidji State University and they would not look back as they upended BSU, 74-46. Jetvig finished with 22 points on the game. Friday’s game was the conference opener for the Beavers at BSU Gymnasium. Bemidji State falls to 2-2 (0-1 NSIC). MSU Moorhead improves to 3-1 (1-0 NSIC).

Bemidji State was outshot 44.2 percent to 27.6 percent from the field in Friday night’s game. The Beavers were outrebounded 48 to 27. BSU was led on the game by Jessie Althoff (So., F/C, Becker, Minn.) with seven points and three rebounds. Seniors Anna Hebrink (G, Austin, Minn.) and Colleen McKay (C, Barnum, Minn.) each chipped in six points. Freshman Melissa Borstner (G, East Bethel, Minn.) had four points and was BSU’s leading rebounder with six. BSU’s leading scorer on the season, Ellie Wessling (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.), who came into the game averaging 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds, was held to seven points and two rebounds. BSU had 18 turnovers on the game.

Jetvig, who came into the game leading all NSIC players with 20.7 points and 11.3 rebounds, led the Dragons with 22 points and five rebounds. Jetvig shot eight-for-10 from the field and was five-of-six from the charity stripe. Guard Haley Thomforde added 14 points on the game, including nine in the second half. Betsy Dickson finished Friday’s game with 11 points. MSU Moorhead shot 42.9 percent from three-point land. Katey Wrobel led all Dragon players on the boards with 10.

MSU Moorhead put on a shooting clinic in the first half connecting on 57.7 percent of their shots from the field and 53.8 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. Jetvig put up a perfect half for the Dragons hitting on seven-of-seven from the field. She went into the locker room with 17 points to lead all scorers. Marissa Yernatich and Dickson each added six points. Wrobel grabbed seven boards in the first half. The Dragons outrebounded 21 to 11.

Bemidji State was led by Hebrink’s six points in the opening half. Althoff added five points. The Beavers shot 32.1 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc.

BSU falls to 3-3 in conference home openers during the Mike Curfman era. The Beavers are now 38-51 all-time against the Dragons. MSU Moorhead has captured 10 of the last 13 meetings between the two universities.

Bemidji State will return to play on Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip against the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
