McKay and Ellisor garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Colleen McKay (Sr., C, 6-0, Barnum, Minn.) and James Ellisor (Jr., F, 6-5, 195, Glendale, Ariz.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of Jan. 3-Jan. 9.

McKay averaged 16 points and nine rebounds on the week as she helped the Bemidji State women’s basketball team to a split against No. 9 Wayne State College and No. 21 Augustana College. McKay tallied a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds in the upset victory over Augustana on Saturday which served as the team’s first win over a ranked opponent since defeating defending National Champion Minnesota State, ranked No. 11, last season. The victory was also BSU’s first win over Augustana since their first meeting with the Vikings on Dec. 10, 1983.

On top of her 18 points and nine rebounds against Augustana, McKay tallied two assists and four steals. She was 9-of-13 shooting in the game. McKay converted a crucial layup in the final seconds against Augie and also set up Morgan Lee with an assist on a layup to give BSU a 77-75 lead with 1:06 remaining. On Sunday against Wayne State, McKay had 12 points and nine rebounds on five of 10 shooting from the field.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the second of McKay’s career, earning the award earlier this season. It stands as the fourth time a member of the BSU women’s basketball has been selected for the award in 2010-11, as she follows the Nov. 24 pick, Ellie Wessling (Fr., F, 5-10, Winstead, Minn.) and Anna Hebrink (Sr., G, 5-8, Austin, Minn.) who was selected for the honor Jan. 5.

Ellisor played both ends of the court in the conference home split with Augustana (69-67 loss) and Wayne State (63-53 win) Jan. 8-9. He averaged 14 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while adding five total blocks and five steals in the two games. In the win against WSC, Ellisor recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, establishing another season-high with three blocks. He shot 41.4 percent from the field on the weekend, while committing just four total turnovers in 31.5 minutes per game. Nine of his 17 rebounds came on the offensive glass.

This marks the third Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award for Ellisor this season, while he is the fourth member of the BSU men’s basketball team to be selected for the individual honor. Patrick Cassidy (Sr., F, 6-6, 221, St. Paul, Minn.) earned the award Dec. 1.

The Bemidji State men’s basketball team begins a four-game road trip Jan. 14-15 with St. Cloud State University and Concordia University, St. Paul, respectively. BSU is 7-6 on the season with a 4-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record. Friday’s game beings at 8 p.m., while the tilt in St. Paul is set for 6 p.m.

McKay and the BSU women’s basketball team, which owns 5-8 mark overall and is 2-7 in NSIC play, is also on the road at SCSU and CU. Tip-off on Friday is 6 p.m., while the game Saturday is set for a 4 p.m. start.
