The Game
The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team closes the 2011-12 exhibition season Nov. 6 with a contest at University of Minnesota at 2 p.m. at Williams Arena. The Beavers are 1-0 this season after a 97-61 victory against Lakehead University (Ontario) Nov. 3 at BSU Gymnasium. BSU finished last season winning two of its last four games to close the campaign with a 7-19 overall and 4-18 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record to finish 13th in the final standings.

The Beavers
Junior guard Shannon Thompson scored 14 points and added career-highs in assists (9) and steals (7) in the victory against Lakehead. All 13 Beavers that played scored at least a point and got at least six minutes of play. Sophomore center Kate Warmack contributed a career-high 18 points and added a team-best nine boards.
The Beavers shot 49.3 percent from the field, 47.1 percent from beyond the arc and 84 percent from the charity stripe. BSU outrebounded its opponent from the north 48-33. The Beavers posted 23 assists on the night, the most since the last time they scored more than 97 points, which was Nov. 20, 2009 vs Martin Luther (108-63). BSU also won the steals category 16-9 and blocks 6-1.
Sophomore Ellie Wessling (G/F) was the other Beaver in double-digits with 11 points. Senior forward Taylor Davis had nine points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds. Fellow senior guard Samantha Baldwin had six points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. The newcomers combined for 29 points, led by Allison McKee’s (G) nine points and five rebounds on 3-of-5 (60%) shooting from the field.
BSU was tabbed 13th in the 2011-12 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll Oct. 25. The Beavers return 10 student-athletes from last season’s roster and welcome six newcomers. The lone seniors on the team are Baldwin (G, 5-7, St. Thomas, N.D.) and Davis (F, 5-10, Crookston, Minn.). Twelve of the 16 student-athletes on the roster are listed as freshmen or sophomores, as the team added six newcomers (five freshmen, one sophomore transfer) to the roster during the off-season.

The Golden Gophers

Minnesota hosted Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference-rival St. Cloud State University Nov. 2, earning a 86-51 victory against the Huskies. Six Gophers posted 10 points or more, led by Kiara Buford’s 14 points. The team shot 50.7 percent from the field, while holding SCSU to 29.5 percent.
Minnesota finished the 2010-11 season with a 12-18 overall mark and a 4-12 record in the Big Ten for a ninth-place finish. The Gophers were eliminated in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament by Northwestern, 53-44, which marked the second-straight year since the 2000-01 season that Minnesota posted a sub-.500
record and failed to advance to postseason play. The Golden Gophers return their top scorer and top rebounder,
Buford (14.9ppg) and Jackie Voigt (6.5rpg), from a season ago.

The Series

Bemidji State and Minnesota have met four times, but not since 1978. BSU is 1-3 all-time against the Gophers, getting its lone victory in 1973 by the score of 46-40.
