Thompson and Scheff garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Shannon Thompson (Jr., G, Rosemount, Minn.) and Brody Scheff (Sr., S, Waconia, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6.

Thompson scored 14 points and added career-highs in assists (9) and steals (7) as the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team rolled to a 97-61 victory against Lakehead University (Ontario) Thursday at the BSU Gymnasium to open the 2011-12 regular season. Thompson played the most minutes for BSU (28) and only turned the ball over once. She shot 57.1 (4-for-7) percent from the field, 50 (3-for-6) percent from 3-point land and was 3-for-4 (75%) from the charity stripe. She also added nine points, five assists and three rebounds in 32 minutes of play in the exhibition game at University of Minnesota Sunday.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the first of the season and second of Thompson’s career. It marks the first occasion a member of the BSU women’s basketball team has been recognized during the 2011-12 campaign.

Scheff matched his career-high in tackles with 19 (seven solo) and forced and recovered a fumble in the 19-14 upset victory against No. 6 St. Cloud State University Saturday. The fumble by SCSU was at BSU’s one yard line to end a St. Cloud State drive that had gone six plays for 48 yards. The play happened at the end of the first quarter when the Huskies were up 7-6.

The tackle total ties his own mark for second-most in the NSIC this season. Scheff posted 19 tackles in the 26-23 loss to then-No. 11 Minnesota Duluth Sept. 24. He has a team-best 90 tackles this season to rank fifth in the NSIC.

In addition to Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors, Scheff was also named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Scheff’s award marks the fourth time this season he has been selected for Beaver Pride’s weekly award (9/7, 9/27, 10/12). The BSU football team has been honored nine times this season. In addition to Scheff (9/7, 9/27, 10/12, 11/9), Lance Rongstad (Jr., QB, Eleva, Wis.) was selected for the award Sept. 7 and Oct. 19, Dustin Kroeplin (Jr., RB, Withee, Wis) Sept. 21, Zach Pulkinen (So., K, Minot, N.D.) Oct. 5 and Brian Leonhardt (Jr., TE, Blaine, Minn.) Nov. 2.

The BSU football team (7-3; 6-3 NSIC, 2-3 NSIC North) closes the 2011 regular season Nov. 12 at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference-foe University of Minnesota, Crookston at 1 p.m. at Ed Widseth Field.

Thompson and the women’s basketball team (1-0) continue regular season play Nov. 19 in a home game against Mayville State University at 2 p.m. at BSU Gymnasium.
