The Weekend

The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team (5-3; 1-1 NSIC) opens the home portion of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule Dec. 16-17 with Northern State University at 6 p.m. Dec. 16 and University of Mary at 4 p.m. Dec. 17. BSU will also close the nonconference schedule Dec. 19 at Division I University of North Dakota.        

The Beavers

The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team is 3-1 in NSIC play for the first time since 2006-07 after going 2-0 at Winona State University (69-62) and Upper Iowa University (72-50) Dec. 9-10. On the weekend, the Beavers shot 47.3 percent from the field, while playing stellar defense and holding WSU and UIU to a combined 29.6 percent shooting. Sophomore Kate Warmack missed just two shots from the field on the weekend, going 13-for-15 (86.7%). Sophomore Morgan Lee posted her second 20 point game of the season.   
    BSU is 5-3 overall and are 2-0 at the BSU Gymnasium this season. Warmack has been outstanding for the Beavers, averaging 14.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game and shooting 57.9 percent from the field - leads the NSIC in field goal percentage.

• The Beavers are sitting at 499 program wins, looking for 500 this weekend.
• Sophomore Kate Warmack’s 64.1 percent from the field in conference games leads the NSIC.
• BSU leads the league and ranks 18th in the nation in field goal percentage defense, holding its opponent to a 33.4 percent clip.
• The Beavers are shooting 35.8 percent from beyond the arc to rank second in the NSIC.

The Wolves

The Wolves are 6-3 overall and 2-2 in conference games this season. NSU split the NSIC weekend at home against then-No. 4 Wayne State College (L, 60-38) and Augustana College (W, 61-53) Dec. 9-10. The Wolves went 4-1 in nonconference play before opening league games. Senior Emily Becken leads the team in points per game with 11.9 and assists with 29.

The Beavers have been playing the Wolves since 1986, but have a rough history with NSU, as they hold an 8-45 all-time record. BSU is 1-9 in the last 10 with the last win coming Jan. 11, 2008 at home by the score of 77-65. Last season the Beavers lost at home 82-64 and on the road 64-41 to NSU. Head coach Mike Curfman is 2-10 as the Beaver bench boss against the Wolves.  

The Marauders

The Marauders are riding high after a 72-64 upset of then-No. 4 Wayne State Dec. 10 in Bismarck, N.D. Junior Linda Murray scored 20 points and added 14 rebounds in the win against the Wildcats. The win moved U-Mary to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in NSIC play. The Marauders lead the league in rebounds per game with 46.5 and own a +9.5 margin over their opponents this season. Junior Ali Collins leads U-Mary with 11.4 points per game and 20 assists.

The Beavers played U-Mary just once before it joined the NSIC and that was in 1984. BSU is just 2-8 all-time against the Marauders, with the last win coming Jan. 16, 2010 in the friendly confines of the BSU Gymnasium. Last season U-Mary won in Bismarck 72-50 and in Bemidji 69-52.     

The Fighting Sioux
North Dakota is 4-5 overall and has yet to open play a game in the Great West Conference. UND will play University of Northern Iowa Dec. 17 before hosting the Beavers. The Fighting Sioux are on a four-game losing streak heading into the game with UNI. lLeading the team in points (11.4) and rebounds (9.4) per game is sophomore forward Madi Buck .

The Beavers are 13-27 all-time against UND with history that dates back to 1968. BSU has lost the last 15 contest to the Fighting Sioux with the last victory coming in 1986.
