Lee, Thompson heroics guide Beavers to 56-54 victory at NSU
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Sophomore guard Morgan Lee (Hayward, Wis.) knocked down a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left and junior Shannon Thompson (G, Rosemount, Minn.) converted on a lay-up with four seconds left to guide the Bemidji State University women’s basketball to a 56-54 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win at Northern State University Saturday. With the win the Beavers move to 8-12 overall and 6-9 in NSIC play.

After the Beavers and Wolves traded baskets to open the contest, BSU opened a five point lead at 13-8 on a freshman guard Jessi Corrick (Grand Rapids, Minn.) 3-pointer with 13:15 left in the first half. The small lead held until NSU knotted the game 24-24 with 5:24 remaining. Both teams went cold to close the half, as the Wolves owned a 27-26 lead heading into the locker room.

The Wolves opened the second half with a 9-0 lead to own a 36-26 advantage with 16:53 left in the second half. The Beavers then turned the game around and posted a 13-4 run that put BSU down 40-39 with 12:16 remaining in the half. The Beavers got seven points from Lee in the run. BSU eventually tied the game 44-44, but NSU went on a 7-0 run to take the seven point lead with 7:11 left in the half.

The Beavers then found a way to hold the Wolves to just three points the rest of the way, as Lee and Thompson added the last minute heroics to win the road game. Senior Samantha Baldwin (G, St. Thomas, N.D.) had a game-high 14 points and added five rebounds. Lee closed the game with 13 points on 5-for-9 (55.6%) shooting from the field and 3-for-4 (75%) from beyond the arc. Sophomore Kate Warmack (C, East Grand Forks, N.D.) also pitched in 13 points and had five rebounds.

Both teams shot 38.9 percent from the field. The Beavers turned the ball over 11 times and forced 14 NSU giveaways to own a 13-7 advantage in points off turnovers. The game had seven lead changes and four times the contest was tied.

The Beavers complete a three-game NSIC road trip Feb. 4 at University of Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m.
