Bemidji State falls at Augustana, 97-48

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Elmen Center) -- The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team fell in its weekend finale Sunday at Augustana University, 97-48. Sophomore guard Maria Appicelli and junior guard Erica Gartner each led the Beavers in scoring with nine points each.

In addition to leading the team in scoring, Appicelli also led with six rebounds while chipping in two assists. Freshman guard Trinity Myer also helped on the offensive side with three assists.

Augustana began the game on a 25-2 run before allowing Bemidji State to make its first field goal of the game. The Beavers went 0-for-11 from the floor before freshman forward Taylor Vold put in a layup with 1:45 in the first quarter.

Although BSU more than doubled its scoring from the first quarter, AU scored 28 points in the second period to head into halftime with a 55-18 lead. The Vikings extended their lead following runs of 11-1 in the third quarter and 9-3 in the fourth quarter.

The Beavers shot 24.6 percent (16-of-65) from the field, 20.0 percent (6-30) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line. The Vikings finished 50.0 percent (36-of-72) from the floor, 43.3 percent (13-of-30) and 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the charity stripe.

Bemidji State returns to action Sunday, Dec. 30 in the season finale against University of Minnesota Crookston. The Beavers and Golden Eagles tip-off at 2 p.m. from the Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
