Dragons sneak away with 62-54 win over Beavers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse) -- Bemidji State University’s women’s basketball program held a lead into the fourth quarter Friday night before Minnesota State University Moorhead pulled away to sneak out a 62-54 victory in Moorhead, Minn. Sophomore center Taylor Bray shot perfect from the field to lead the Beavers with 14 points while freshman guard Trinity Myer scored six of the team’s final nine points.

MSU Moorhead jumped ahead to a six-point, 10-4, lead late in the first quarter before the sophomore duos of Brooklyn Bachmann and Bray combined for a 6-0 run to tie the game, 10-10. After MSUM scored the final points of the opening period, the game spanned nearly 15 minutes before BSU began its run to take its first lead of the game.

Myer sparked an 8-0 run by the Beavers with her first points of the game that led BSU to a 23-20 advantage, capped by a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Maria Appicelli. Sophomore guard Sydney Zerr followed Appicelli’s 3-pointer with one of her own, followed by a free throw conversion from Bray, to help give BSU a three-point, 27-24, lead at halftime.

The Beavers carried their lead into the fourth quarter, led by Bachmann with six points in the third quarter before the Dragons took their first lead since the first half with 9:21 to go in the game. BSU scored four of the first seven total points in the fourth quarter before MSUM went on a 7-0 run to take its largest lead to this point, 51-45. Bemidji State fought back to within three points late in the game, 55-52, scored by Myer. Myer finished with six of the last nine points for BSU as MSUM pulled away for the victory.

Following Bray in scoring, who went 4-for-4 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line, was Bachmann with 12 points. Bachmann added four assists and three steals while Zerr finished with 10 points in 40 minutes.

Bemidji State shot 38.6 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. MSUM out-rebounded BSU, 41-27, which included 25 second-chance points. After leading points off turnovers through the first half, 8-4, Bemidji State allowed MSU Moorhead to score 23 points off turnovers through the game.

Bemidji State returns to BSU Gymnasium Jan. 18-19 with a weekend slate versus NSIC South opponents Upper Iowa University and Winona State University.
