Cougars pounce on Beavers to open weekend road trip

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Stewart Center) -- Bemidji State University women’s basketball took an early lead Friday night against University of Sioux Falls but let an ensuing run by USF control the game as BSU fell, 95-47. The Beavers drop to 5-14 overall and 3-12 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while the Cougars improve to 14-7 overall and 9-6 in conference play.

Bemidji State was able to drive to the basket for its first two baskets while sophomore center Taylor Bray gave the team its first lead of the game, 7-5, with the second 3-pointer of her career. The Cougars followed with 12 straight points and 15 of the next 17, holding the Beavers to 0-for-5 shooting from the field with two turnovers.

The Beavers went into the halftime break facing a 42-23 deficit that grew as the second half wore on. Sioux Falls outscored Bemidji State in every quarter and scored at least 20 in three of the four periods.

Bemidji State was held to 15-of-51 shooting from the field, its third lowest shooting percentage of the season, and 21.1 percent from beyond the arc, its fifth lowest 3-point percentage of the season. USF controlled the boards with 45 rebounds compared to 29 for BSU, including 17 offensive rebounds for the Cougars.

Bray led BSU with 13 points and five rebounds while sophomore guard Sydney Zerr followed in scoring with nine points, all coming in the first half.

Bemidji State and Southwest Minnesota State University close out the weekend of interdivisional games at 4 p.m. Saturday from R/A Facility in Marshall, Minn.
