Beavers scoring duo not enough in weekend-opening loss to Marauders

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) – Sophomore center Taylor Bray and freshman guard Trinity Myer combined for 30 points Friday night as the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team fell to University of Mary, 73-53, in BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers fall to 5-18 overall and 3-16 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while the Marauders improve to 15-7 overall and 13-6 in conference play.

Bray and Myer combined for 18 of BSU’s 22 first half points, including the first 15 of the game. Bray and Myer combined to go 4-of-6 from the field during the first half while the third Beaver to record a point was senior forward Emma Rappe with 2:50 remaining in the first half.

The Beavers took their only lead of the game early in the first quarter as Myer put in a layup followed by one of two free throws for a 3-2 edge. U-Mary scored the ensuing five points although BSU went on a 6-2 run to end the first quarter trailing by three, 16-13.

The Marauders opened the second quarter on an 18-2 run, holding BSU to 1-for-9 shooting from the field during the run. Coming out of the halftime break trailing by 16 points, 38-22, BSU went down by 32, 56-24, after U-Mary opened the second half 7-for-7 from the field to go on an 18-2 run.

Bray finished the game with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field with seven rebounds while Myer scored 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting. The Beavers shot 33.3 percent (18-54) from the field and 18.5 percent (5-27) from long range while giving up a season-high 63.4 percent (26-41) shooting from the floor to the Marauders.

Bemidji State will close out the 2018-19 home schedule Saturday with senior day against Minot State University. BSU will tip-off at 3:30 p.m. against MiSU from the BSU Gymnasium.
