Minot State spoils senior day as Bemidji State falls in home finale

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team was handed a 70-52 loss Saturday afternoon by Minot State University in the 2018-19 home finale at BSU Gymnasium. BSU fell on the wrong end of a 22-3 run heading into the fourth quarter that puts the Beavers’ record at 5-19 overall and 3-17 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Bemidji State was cold shooting from the field to open the game, going 0-for-4 from the floor to trail by eight points after three minutes of play. Four different Beavers scored in the first quarter to help cut the deficit to four, 13-9, heading into the second. Sophomore guards Maria Appicelli and Sydney Zerr each hit 3-pointers to bring Minot State’s lead to just two, 17-15, although MiSU extended the lead back to four at the halftime break, 28-24.

Three-pointers again helped BSU to take its first lead of the game, coming off shots from freshman guard Trinity Myer and Zerr. Myer added a layup following the long balls to give Bemidji State a 32-31 advantage, as part of an 8-2 run. BSU found it hard to get to the basket after that point as MiSU went on an 22-3 run that lasted into the fourth quarter, giving the visitors a 53-35 lead.

Myer led BSU with 10 points while adding two assists and one rebound. Sophomore guard Brooklyn Bachmann paced BSU on the boards with five rebounds and dished out four assists.

Minot State held Bemidji State to 37.2 percent (16-43) from the field and 37.0 percent (10-27) from long range. MiSU also won the battles on the boards, 32-17, and in the paint, 36-12.

Bemidji State will finish the 2018-19 regular season Feb. 22-23 on the road against St. Cloud State University and University of Minnesota Duluth.
