Narrow margin goes against Beavers in 63-56 loss

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- An opposing third-quarter spurt hurt the Bemidji State University women's basketball team Friday night as it fell to Minnesota State University Moorhead, 63-56, at BSU Gymnasium.

The Beavers move to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference after holding a 28-26 halftime lead over the Dragons. Freshman center Rachael Heittola led BSU with 12 points off the bench while junior guard Brooklyn Bachmann scored 10 points with six assists and five rebounds.

BSU led by as many as six points midway through the opening quarter and held MSUM to 0-for-4 from the field with two turnovers over the final three minutes of the first half. Bemidji State took a four-point, 30-26 lead early in the third quarter before MSUM went on a 10-4 run to enter the fourth.

Junior guard Brooklyn Bachmann sparked a 9-1 run to bring the Beavers back to within one of the Dragons, 53-52, with 3:46 to play. Sophomore forward Claire Wolhowe hit the only field goal for BSU over the remainder of play while MSUM knocked down 8-of-12 free throws to seal the game late.

The Beavers shot 37.5 percent (18-48) from the field, 40.0 percent (6-15) from long range and 60.9 percent (14-23) from the free throw line. BSU was outrebounded by MSUM, 51-28, and allowed the Dragons to score 21 second-chance points.

Bemidji State closes out its home weekend with a 3:30 p.m. tip-off on Saturday against Northern State University.
