"I feel that we have a good chance to win everytime we go out and compete," said Hougen. "If everyone stays healthy we have a excellent chance to win."
The team has two of the top 10 finishers from the NSIC Championships last season in senior Christa Pribula (East Grand Forks, Minn.) and junior Nicole Friend (International Falls, Minn.). Friend an all-conference runner from last season is going to be looked upon to be one of the leaders for this years team. "I am anticipating both girls to be all-conference runners again this season, " said Hougen.
Pribula was the team's number one finisher in all six of its races last season. Pribula has recieved all-conference honors in her first three seasons at Bemidji State and is expected to excel once again this season. Pribula not only excels in cross country running but also in Indoor and Outdoor track. Achieving excellence in these three sports last season helped her earn Female Athlete of the Year award at Bemidji State in the spring of 2005. "Christa works hard all year around, and has come in this year in better shape because of her hard work," said Hougen.
Needing to run well in addition to Pribula and Friend are returning letter winners sophomore Brittney Olson (Maple Grove, Minn.), and sophomore Jillian Schuster (Brownton, Minn.).
Olson ran in five meets last season with her best outing coming at the NSIC Championships (Oct. 23). She took 13th overall and finished with a time of 25:44.
Schuster ran in all six meets last season including the North Central Regionals. She is going to be looked upon by coach Hougen to have a solid year for the BSU cross country team.
In addition, two transfers that are expected to be a big help to the team. Sophomore Margaret Osgood (St. Cloud, Minn.) transfer from Augustana College and her sister freshman Allison Osgood (St. Cloud, Minn.) transfer from Gustavus Adulfus College are going to be looked upon to compete well for the team. Allison was a soccer player last season at Gustavus Adulfus. "I am looking for Margaret to do well and Allison has a lot of ability," said Hougen.
Incoming freshman that could have an impact right away are Rebecca Haugen (Bemidji, Minn.) and Chandra Stanton (Edina, Minn.). "The biggest change for these girls is going to be that they have to run a four mile race instead of a two mile race," said Hougen. In high school, cross country courses are two miles long where as in college the courses are four miles long. "This could be a big change for some of our girls and take a little while for them to get used to," said Hougen.
The meets during the season will help prepare the team for the NCAA Regionals, which BSU has competed at the last few years. "I am hoping to have a few runners make it to nationals this year," said Hougen. "I feel that the first two meets of the season will be tough competition for us, which will help us make improvements and get better."
