Buerkle and Read named Bemidji State Student-Athletes of the Year

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) and Matt Read (Sr., Ilderton, Ontario) were named as the 2010-11 Bemidji State University Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year, tonight at the BSU Student-Athlete Appreciation Banquet Thursday at Sanford Center. The duo of All-America performers were selected from a pool of nominated student-athletes from BSU’s 17 intercollegiate sport programs.

In addition, Mackenzie Haupert (Fr., Andover, Minn.) of the women’s track and field and cross country teams and men’s basketball standout James Ellisor (Jr., F, Glendale, Ariz.) were selected BSU’s 2010-11 Female and Male Newcomers of the Year.
In all, more than 50 seniors were recognized with the presentation of the athletes and newcomers of the year, serving as the culminating event of the program.

Kristi Buerkle was named 2010-11 Female Student-Athlete of the Year - A 2011 NCAA Division II All-America performer... 2010 NSIC Preseason Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Year... Two-time All-NSIC (Indoor 200 and 400)... USTFCCCA All-Central Region (Indoor)... Five-time 2010-11 Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week... NSIC Female Track Athlete of the Week (Dec. 7)... Placed fifth in the 400-meter dash at the 2011 NCAA Division II Championships... Also qualified and competed in the 200-meters at the national championships... 2011 NSIC Champion and record-holder in the 400-meter dash... Took runner-up honors in the NSIC 200-meter dash... Posted the nation’s second fastest time in the 400 in 2010-11... Has already provisionally qualified for the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor championships with the seventh-fastest time in the 400-meter dash... Finished as BSU’s top runner in all six of its 2010 cross country races...  Had three top-15 finishes...  Placed 35th at NSIC championships... Track and field team captain... Cross country team captain... During her career she has been a five-time All-America performer...  Three-time NSIC Champion... BSU indoor record-holder in: 60M, 200M (24.94), 300M (40.25), 400M (54.76), 600M (1:36.53), 800M (2:19.11) and ran the anchor leg of BSU’s top 4x400-meter relay time (3:59.95)... BSU outdoor record-holder in: 200M (24.65) and 400M (53.85)... NSIC record-holder in the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash... 18-time Beaver Pride Athlete of the week during her career.    

Academic Accomplishments: 3.86 GPA in elementary education, Academic All-NSIC Cross Country, Academic All-NSIC Track and Field, 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V College Division Second Team, 2011 Myles Brand/NSIC Academic with Distinction recipient, USTFCCCA All-Academic Individual (track and field), BSU Dean’s List and BSU Athletics 3.0 Club.

BSU/Community Service and Involvement: St. Phillip’s School lunch volunteer, Bemidji Senior Citizen’s Fall Clean-up volunteer, Bemidji Community Health Awareness Day volunteer, Special Olympics volunteer, BSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisory board (SAAC), Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Speed Quest clinician, BSU road race volunteer, Suicide Run volunteer, BSU Women’s Walk volunteer.

BSU’s 2010-11 Male Athlete of the Year is Matt Read - Signed NHL contract with Philadelphia Flyers at the conclusion of the collegiate season... Finished the 2010-11 campaign with the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL where he recorded seven goals and 7-6=13 points in 11 games... Named 2010-11 Lowe’s Senior CLASS award finalist... Two-time Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week... Saw time in 37 of 38 games for the Beavers, leading the team with a career-high 22 goals, while finishing second among teammates with 22-13=35 points... Led the team with 15 points on the power-play, posted a team-best three short-handed goals and was among the team leaders in blocked shots... He finished the season third on the team with a +3 plus/minus rating... Completed the season tied for fifth in the nation with three short-handed goals, 14th in goals per game (0.59), 22nd in power-play goals... Was ninth in the WCHA with nine goals scored in league play, sixth in power-play scoring (6-7=13)... 15th in WCHA scoring (13-12=25)... In 147 games played at Bemidji State the Ilderton, Ontario native finished his collegiate career as BSU’s Division I-era scoring leader with 143 points, which places him 18th on the Beavers’ all-time scoring list... In four seasons, he missed just one game, leading the Beavers to three College Hockey America (CHA) regular-season championships, a CHA Tournament title and two trips to the NCAA Tournament, which included a magical run to the 2009 Frozen Four... Read established BSU Division I-era records for goals (65), assists (78) and points in addition to marks for points (143) and games played (147)... A two-time captain, the 2010 CHA Player of the Year, a 2010 RBK Second Team All-America selection was a perennial All-CHA pick... A five-time Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week pick... Seven-time CHA Player of the Week recipient... 2008 CHA All-Rookie Team... 2008 CHA Rookie of the Year... 2009 CHA All-Tournament Team and Most Outstanding Player pick... NCAA Midwest Region All-Tournament Team... 2010 INCH All-CHA Team... 2010 INCH CHA Player of the Year.

Academic Accomplishments:
3.15 GPA in exercise science,  A two-time member of the CHA All-Academic team and was selected as an
Academic All-WCHA award recipient this season.

BSU/Community Service and Involvement: Volunteers at Bemidji elementary schools as a part of BSU’s Elementary school reading partnership, BSU’s Walk for Women, Shriner’s parade.

The 2010-11 Female Newcomer of the Year is Mackenzie Haupert - Letterwinner in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field... Competed in five of the Beavers’ six meets of the 2010-11 season... Placed among BSU’s top four runners three times... Posted her best finish of her freshman campaign at the U-Mary Open where she finished 24th with a season-best 6,000-meter time of 25:58.89... Competed on a BSU team that placed 20th at the Central Region Meet... Competed in the 200-, 400- and 600- during the indoor season... Posted the league’s 20th-best time in the 600-meter dash (1:43.15).

Academic Accomplishments: 3.55 GPA in exercise science with a minor in mathematics, Dean’s List, BSU Athletics 3.0 Club... Member of BSU’s 2010 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Cross Country Team.

BSU/Community Service and Involvement: Bemidji Senior Citizens Clean-up Day, Bemidji Community Health Fair volunteer, Suicide Prevention 5K road race volunteer.

James Ellisor, a member of the BSU men’s basketball team, was selected as this year’s Male Newcomer of the Year - Second-Team All-NSIC... Averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and shoot 57.9 percent from the field in 2010-11 to lead the team in all three categories... He led the NSIC in field goal percentage, while ranking in the top 10 in steals (4th, 1.6 spg), blocks (T6th, 0.9 bpg), scoring (7th) and rebounding (9th)... Started 25 of 26 games for BSU and posted 10 20-plus scoring games... Recorded double-figures point totals in all but two contests... His 17.3 points per game ranked 35th in the nation... Ellisor averaged 32.3 minutes per game, playing 38 minutes in three contests... The junior’s 78.8 percent from the free throw line was second on the team (at least 2.5 makes per game).

Academic Accomplishments: 4.0 GPA in sport management and mass communication... Dean’s List... BSU Athletics 3.0 Club.

BSU/Community Service and Involvement: Special Olympics volunteer, Shrine Parade participant, Beaver Buddies Clinics volunteer and Bemidji United Way Chilli Cook-Off set-up volunteer.
