BSU places 20th at NCAA Central Region Championship

WAYNE, Neb. --  The Bemidji State University cross country team closed out the 2010 campaign Saturday competing in the 2010 NCAA Central Region Cross Country Championship hosted by Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb.  

The Beavers, who were led by senior Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.), finished 20th with a team score of 570.

Buerkle turned in a time of 25:00.30 in the 6,000-meter race to place 97th individually.  The Stacy, Minn. native and team captain finished 4:07.20 off the pace set by Kristen McGlenn of Adams State College, who earned top individual honors and lead the Grizzlies to the team title with a 20:53.40.

ASC captured the championship with a team score of 45, placing all five of its runners in the top 15. Western State College of Colorado ran a close second with 48 points, while Augustana College, the 2010 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion, placed third with a score of 65.  University of Mary placed fourth with 112, edging the University of Minnesota Duluth (115) to be the fourth and final team advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships held Dec. 4 in Louisville, Ken.

Despite being edged by just three points in the teams standings, UMD will still be represented at the NCAA Championships.  Morgan Place was one of two individual qualifiers for the national meet joining runner up Alexis Skarda of Mesa State.  Place finished third behind Skarda (21:01.05) with a time of 21:08.80.

In all, Bemidji State had six runners compete in the race. In addition to Buerkle, junior Kirsten Maras (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) posted a 25:29.00 to place 108th, while Alison Hougen (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) was just 23 seconds (25:52.05) behind in 117th.  Cierra Robinson (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) finished in 123rd with a time of 26:51.80 and Tina Larson (So., Morris, Minn.) clocked a time of 27:06.25 to round out the Beavers’ scoring times in 125th place. Mackenzie Haupert (Fr., Andover, Minn.) was BSU’s final participant and placed 134th overall crossing the finish line in 28:59.60.
