BSU runners finish 20th at Central Regional

DENVER, Colo. (Washington Park) -- Led by sophomore Tina Larson (Bemidji, Minn.), the Bemidji State University cross country team finished 20th at the 2011 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships Saturday at Washington Park in Denver, Colo.

Larson completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 26 minutes, 55 seconds to cross the line 4:42 off the pace set by Western State College’s Lauren Kleppin (22:13), who finished the race with an 18-second cushion over the field for the regional’s individual title.

Kleppin led also led Western to the team title. The Mountaineers had four participants finish among the top 10 as the squad scored 37 points to hold a 10-point edge over Adams State College, which took runner up honors.

The top five women’s teams, which included Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) members: Augustana College in third (70), University of Mary in fourth (77) and University of Minnesota Duluth in fifth (214), qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships Nov. 19 in Spokane, Wash.

Bemidji State’s team score of 546 was comprised of the finishes of five of its seven runners.  In addition to Larson’s 93rd-place result, seniors Kirsten Maras (Anoka, Minn.) finished 101st (27:10), Brittney Becker (Grand Rapids, Minn.) took 115th (27:50) and Alison Hougan (Bemidji, Minn.) clocked a 27:57 to finish in 117th place. Tess Boucher (Fr., Alexandria, Minn.) crossed the line in 28:10 to take 120th and round of the Beavers’ scoring finishes. In addition, Michelle Ohman (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) posted a time of 28:58 to finish 127th and Taylor Sautbine (So., Tamarack, Minn.) turned in a 29:15 to hold down 129th places overall.

The regional meet brings the 2011 Bemidji State cross country season to a close.
