10in10: BSU cross country newcomer Mikayla Connell

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The academic year is underway and the sound of Bemidji State University athletic teams preparing for the 2012 season have flooded the BSU campus. In the final 10 days before the Beavers officially kick off the fall athletic season with their first home football game, BSUBeavers.com wants to get you geared up for 2012. 

Now in day nine of the 10-day series, BSUBeavers.com will give you inside access to fall training camp through the eyes of 10 Bemidji State student-athletes. Today we get a look at cross country preparations from the point of view of newcomer Mikayla Connell (Fr., Bemijdi, Minn.).

Connell, is one of nine freshman on Head Coach Craig Hougen's 2012 roster. A native of Bemidji, her surroundings haven't change much recently, but the competition has.  We caught up with Connell an go her thoughts on the transition to college, what fall training workouts have been like and what she looks forward to most about her first collegiate race.

Under the direction of Hougen, the BSU cross country team completed the 2011 season placing 20th at the NCAA Division II Central Regional Championships. In addition to Larson, Hougen welcomes back eight veteran runners, while he has added eight newcomers.

The Beavers began practice Aug. 19 and broke their two-a-day schedule Aug. 24 to participate in the BSU cross country alumni road race, the Babe Run. BSU officially gets its schedule underway tomorrow, when the team travels to Valley City, N.D. to participate in the Valley City State Invitational.  The 4,000-meter race will take place at 4 p.m.
