Bemidji State concludes season at NCAA Central Region Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Bemidji State University cross country team concluded the 2013 season Saturday at the NCAA Central Region Championships. The Beavers finished 30th in the 6,000-meter race held at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.

BSU finished last in the 30-team event with a team score of 845 and an average time of twenty-five minutes and thirty-one seconds. The Beavers’ total time was 2:07:35.46. Sophomore Mikayla Connell (Bemidji, Minn.) shaved off nearly a minute of her time from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships – a 6,000-metetr race held at Yankton Trail Park Oct. 26 – and turned in a time of 24:46.89 to lead the team and finish 153rd. Sophomore Emily Turner (Bringham Lake, Minn.) posted a time of 24:52.70 to finish 159th.

The race featured 30 teams and 203 student-athletes. The NSIC’s University of Minnesota Duluth won the event with a team time of 1:48:46.23. Southwest Baptist University, Augustana College and Winona State University finished second, third and fourth, respectfully to advance to the NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships. University of Mary’s Jennifer Agnew recorded a time of 20:26.57 to win the event. She will also be advancing to the national meet as an individual.

Bemidji State finished 23 of 26 teams at last year’s NCAA Regional. BSU posted 719 points and averaged a team time of 25:14. This year, both Turner and Connell clocked times faster than in 2012 as, Turner led BSU with a time of 25:29.9 to take 156th and Connell posted a time of 25:40.5 to finish 160th.

Today’s race ends the 2013 season for the Beavers. BSU began the season winning the Greenwood Run Sept. 6, guided by a first-place finish by Turner. At the 2013 NSIC Championships, BSU posted 396 points and completed the 6,000-meter race with a team time of 2:06:57 to finish last. Turner guided the Beavers with a time of 24:06 to finish 72nd out of 124 student-athletes. Sophomore Jolynne Denman (Esko, Minn.) posted a time of 25:17 to finish 94th.
