Emily Turner tabbed 2014 NSIC Cross Country Athlete to Watch

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Bemidji State University junior Emily Turner (Bringham Lake, Minn.) was selected as a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Cross Country Athlete to Watch in 2014 as a part of the league’s annual preseason coaches’ poll. The Beavers were picked to finish 15th.

Turner returns for her junior season after leading BSU in three of five events in 2013. Highlighted by a individual title at the 4,000-meter Greenwood Run (16:49), Turner’s season also included 25th place at the Randy Smith Invitational, where she posted a season-best 5,000-meter time of 20:09. In addition, she led the Beavers at the NSIC Championship, clocking a time of 24:06 in the 6,000-meter race and was a member of a BSU squad that competed in the NCAA Division II Central Region in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Samantha Rivard, a 2013 NCAA Division II All-American from the University of Minnesota Duluth, was selected as the NSIC Preseason Athlete of the Year following a freshman campaign during which she earned First Team All-NSIC and the league’s Newcomer of the Year honors. After placing fourth at the 2013 NSIC Championships (21:29), she clocked a time of 21:11 to take fourth at the NCAA Division II Central Regional and finished eighth at the NCAA Division II Championships, turning in a time of 21:17.

The Beavers received 23 votes to hold down the 15th spot in the poll, led by defending NSIC and regional team champion Minnesota Duluth, which garnered 196 points and 14 of 15 first place votes. Augustana College picked up the remaining first place vote to finish second in the poll with 182 points. Winona State University settled into the third spot for the second consecutive season with 161 points.

Under the direction of head coach Craig Hougen, the Bemidji State cross country team lifts the lid on its 2014 campaign Sept. 5 when it hosts the Greenwood Run at Greenwood Golf Course. The race is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
