Cross Country heads to Moorhead, Minn., for NSIC Championships

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University cross country team will participate in the 2017 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 21 at Moorhead, Minn. Eight Beavers will travel with their sights set on claiming a spot on the All-NSIC team.

A different Beaver has taken the team lead over its first three races of the season, including junior Sarone Paulzine, freshman Ellen Peterson and freshmen Brittny Hillstrom. Paulzine and junior Courtney Anderson are the only two participants who have ran in the NSIC Championships previously, as the other six are true freshmen. Paulzine and Anderson each ran their fastest times at the NSIC Championships last season, Paulzine leading the way at 23:52.2 and Anderson with a personal-record time of 26:53.31.

BSU’s four other true freshmen, including Carissa Decko, Ashley Herdering,  Ashley Kinnard and Kristen Petron, all make their first career appearances at the NSIC Championships.

Hillstrom made her first finish atop BSU’s squad at the Bob Waxlax Invitational with a time of 24:53.8 in the 6K race. She finished 22nd overall and beat her previous 6K time by nearly two minutes. Paulzine finished second for BSU and 26th overall with a time of 25:11.7.

Peterson, who has finished among BSU’s top three in every meet this season, finished behind Paulzine and 30th overall with a personal best time of 25:22.1. The time was 1:25.6 better than her 6K time at the Roy Griak Invitational. Kinnard also set a personal record by over one minute with a 26:02.2 finish to take 37th.

Petron (46th, 27:16.2), Herdering (50th, 28:16.3), Anderson (58th, 31:39.0) and Decko (60th, 35:55.9) rounded out BSU’s participants. Petron, Herdering and Decko each set personal records in the race.

The 2017 NCAA Central Regional meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4, held in Kearney, Neb.
