Mackedanz leads after day 1 of Golden Bear Classic

LAKE CITY, Minn. (Jewel Golf Club) - Mitchell Mackedanz (Fr., Paynesville, Minn.) shot a blistering 33 on the front nine Monday on his way to a 33-38=71 and a three stoke lead over the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition after 18 holes of the 36-hole Golden Bear Invitational at Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn. On the shoulders of Mackedanz, the Bemidji State Golf team sits seven strokes behind the leading University of Minnesota-Crookston (303) tied with Upper Iowa University for third place with a team total of 310.

Mackedanz leads a tournament for the first time in his young career, firing even par on the 6,669-yard course. The Beavers' also had Jeff Peltier (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Clint Cornell (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) finish in the top day after 18 holes. Peltier, who was competing as an individual in the event, shot a 38-37=75 to sit in a tie with three others for fourth place while Cornell's 36-40=76 was good for a ninth-place tie just one stroke back.

Minnesota-Crookston leads all teams with a day-1 total of 303 as three of its team members finished in the top-10 after 18-holes. Defending NSIC Conference Champion Winona State University is just one shot off the lead (304), followed by BSU and UIU while hosting Concordia University-St. Paul is in fifth with 342 and Wayne State College rounds out the competition in sixth with a team score of 348.

Bemidji State and the rest of the field will wrap up the event tomorrow in Lake City, Minn.
