BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Maria Sloan (So., Coleraine, Minn.) and Zach Pulkinen (So., K, Minot, N.D.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 2.

Sloan earned medalist honors Sept. 30 at the BSU Invitational. The sophomore carded an 89 (+17) at the par-72, 5,901-yard Bemidji Town and Country Club leading Bemidji State women’s golf team to a victory in the triangular in the process. The Beavers scored a 367 (+79) to earn a 22-shot victory over visiting Minnesota State University Moorhead and University of Minnesota, Crookston.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the first of Sloan’s career and marks the first occasion a member of the BSU women’s golf team has been recognized during the 2011-12 campaign.

Pulkinen recorded a career-high 12 points in the 48-7 victory at Upper Iowa Saturday. He was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points and went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, knocking them though from 22 and 34 yards out. He also totaled 571 kickoff yards, booting the ball nine times and recording one touchback with a 63.4 yards-per-kick average. He ranks fifth in the NSIC in points kicking with 6.6 points per game.

Pulkinen’s award marks the first of his career, while it is the fifth of the 2011-12 season for a member of the BSU football team. He follows Brody Scheff (Sr., S, Waconia, Minn.) who earned the award Sept. 7 and Sept. 28, Lance Rongstad (Jr., QB, Eleva, Wis.) and Dustin Kroeplin (Jr., RB, Withee, Wis.), who earned the their awards Sept. 14 and Sept. 21, respectfully.

The Beaver women’s golf team travels to Lake City, Minn. Oct. 8-9 for the first two rounds of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championship. The unique league 72-hole event is played in two 36-hole events. One will take place next weekend and the final 36 holes is set for Dakota Ridge Golf Course in Morton, Minn. April 21-22, 2012.

The Beavers (4-1, 3-1 NSIC) return to Chet Anderson Stadium for the annual homecoming contest Oct. 8 against Concordia University, St. Paul at 1 p.m.
