BEMIDJI, MINN. - The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team took advantage of three first-period goals to pull out a 4-3 victory over Manitoba in an exhibition game Saturday night at the John Glas Fieldhouse.

After falling behind 1-0, Melissa Schaeffer tipped in an Emily Curucuruto shot from the point to even the score at 1-1. Andrea Carlson was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Just 35 seconds later with the Beavers on the power play, freshman Helena Tageson tipped in a rebound from an attempt by freshman Nina Ziegenhals to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Freshman Kelly Hart picked up an assist on the goal.

At the 7:36 mark of the first period the Bison evened the score 2-2 with a power play goal by Amber Sarraillon with an assisting pass from Stephan Messner.

BSU then responsed with an even strenth goal from freshman Kate Robinson who tipped in a blast from sophomore Sarah Zuelke to put the Beavers up 3-2 at the 10:12 mark of the period.

After Manitoba tied the game up again, the Beavers would add another power play at the 16:49 mark of the third period when sophomore Laura Lankton scored the gamewinner to solidify a 4-3 win for the Beavers. Freshman Nina Ziegenhals added her second point of the game on the goal.

Head coach Bruce Olson noticed the advantage Manitoba had over BSU by having played several games already.

“They already had four games under their belt and they played us tough, especially on the boards,” Olson said.

Sophmore goaltender Jill Luebke earned the victory after making seven saves and allowing only one goal in two periods of action. Senior Anik Cote compiled five saves in one period of action for the Beavers.

The Beavers open the regular season Oct. 10, against Wayne State at 7:05 p.m. at the John Glas Fieldhouse.
