BEMIDJI, Minn. - Ohio State salvaged a series split with the Bemidji State women’s hockey team with a 3-1 victory this afternoon at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The Buckeyes win was their first in Bemidji since Oct. 12, 2001 when OSU dropped the Beavers 4-2.

In the opening period of play, BSU and OSU were whistled for six penalties and the Buckeyes took advantage of a five-on-three power play at 16:33 of the first stanza when Tessa Bonhomme lit up the scoreboard with her second marker of the season to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.

The second period proved to be the turning point for the Buckeyes, as OSU outshot the Beavers 8-3 and recorded two additional scores to build a 3-0 lead. Krysta Skarda netted her fifth tally of the year just 43 seconds into the period and Meaghan Mulvaney lit the lamp at the 11:50 mark with her sixth goal of the season.

Bemidji State’s fourth line finally put the Beavers on the scoreboard at 2:16 of the third period, as sophomore Melissa Schaeffer netted her second goal of the season off helpers from Nina Ziegenhals and Stephanie Hoard. The assist by Hoard was the first of her career.

Despite outshooting the Buckeyes 7-5 in the final stanza, BSU was unable to generate any scoring and Ohio State secured a 3-1 triumph.

The power-play numbers tell the story for the Beavers, as the home team finished zero-for-six, while the Buckeyes connected on one-of-four power-play chances.

Senior Anik Côté took the loss in net after stopping 16 shots for BSU.

Bemidji State falls to 5-18-1 overall and 3-13-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association competition. Ohio State improves to 12-7-2 and 8-7-1 in WCHA play. The Beavers will continue league play next weekend as the number-one ranked team in the country, Minnesota, wil be in Bemidji for a two-game set at the John Glas Fieldhouse. The puck will drop at 2:05 p.m. on both Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.
