BEMIDJI, Minn. - Minnesota’s first line combination of Becky Wacker, Krissy Wendell and Kelly Stephens combined to tally seven points in a 4-1 Golden Gopher victory over the Bemidji State women’s hockey team this afternoon at the John Glas Fieldhouse. Minnesota is now 17-0-3 all-time against the Beavers.

UM started the game’s scoring at 4:21 when Kelly Stephens lit up the scoreboard to give the Golden Gophers a 1-0 lead. The Beavers quickly answered Minnesota, however, as Kelly Hart netted her team-leading eighth marker of the season at the 15:15 mark. Laura Lankton and Kate Robinson each secured helpers on the goal, their fourth and fifth of the season, respectively. Besides tying the game up at 1-1, BSU outshot UM 7-4 in the opening stanza.

Krissy Wendell tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Golden Gophers at 4:18 of the second period with her 18th goal of the year. Minnesota outshot the Beavers by a 7-4 clip in a period that saw just one goal.

UM added two goals in less than 50 seconds in the final period of regulation, as Becky Wacker notched her ninth goal of the season at 17:01 and Andrea Nichols recorded her sixth lamplighter of the year at 17:49. The Beavers were unable to generate any further scoring and were outshot 9-8 in the third period.

For the game, Minnesota had 20 shots to BSU’s 19. Netminder Anik Côté made 16 saves in the loss and is now 2-9-0 this season.

Despite the game’s outcome, head coach Bruce Olson was pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was a good effort by our players,” Olson commented. “Anik was very sharp in net and I like how we are starting to make better decisions and taking better care of the puck. We’ve improved by leaps and bounds since the beginning of the season.”

Bemidji State drops to 5-19-1 overall and 3-14-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association competition. Minnesota improves to 18-2-1 and 12-2-1 in WCHA play. The Beavers will look to earn a split with the Golden Gophers Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. at the John Glas Fieldhouse.
